Peter B. Angood, M.D.

Dr. Peter Angood is vice president, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and chief patient safety officer of the Joint Commission International Center for Patient Safety.

A native of Canada and its health system, Dr. Angood brings a rich and varied background of 25 years clinical experience to the Joint Commission. He received his medical degree from the University of Manitoba in Canada and completed his training in General Surgery, Trauma and Critical Care at McGill University in Montreal and the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. After initially practicing surgery with hospitals of McGill University, Angood was recruited to the University of Pennsylvania and has subsequently held surgery faculty and hospital administrative positions at Yale University and at Washington University in St. Louis. He is currently a Professor of Surgery, Anesthesia, and Emergency Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Dr. Angood is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Critical Care Medicine. He has involvement with numerous societies of organized medicine, including the American College of Surgeons, American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, Association of Program Directors in Surgery, American Telemedicine Association, Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma and Surgical Infection Society. Dr. Angood is currently president of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, a 13,000-member international organization focused towards intensive care medicine. He is the author of approximately 100 peer-reviewed articles, abstracts, editorials, and book chapters. His research has addressed clinical care, injury prevention, outcomes management, resource utilization, medical education, telemedicine technologies and the utility of simulation.

With his lead role for the Joint Commission International Center for Patient Safety, a relatively new initiative co-sponsored by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and Joint Commission Resources, the Center is focusing on the development of multi-organization collaborative relationships oriented towards Patient Safety, the distribution of numerous tiers of Patient Safety information, the provision of multiple platform Patient Safety focused education programs and the development of solutions for improving care related to recognized Patient Safety problems. The Joint Commission has been active with Patient Safety for greater than 10 years in its efforts to lead improvements for the overall safety, quality and efficiency of health care. The development, maintenance and expansion of a broad-based network of experts is a top priority to the Joint Commission International Center for Patient Safety, as well as the utilization of leading-edge information technologies and Internet-based communications.


Laura Botwinick

Ms. Botwinick is Vice President for External Relations at Joint Commission Resources, Inc. (JCR), and Co-Director of the Joint Commission International Center for Patient Safety (ICPS). The ICPS is jointly sponsored by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and JCR. Prior to joining JCR in July 2005, Ms. Botwinick completed a one-year Fellowship with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), in Boston, Massachusetts. The Fellowship included participation in the ongoing work of the IHI, structured education and training, and individual projects. While in Boston, she completed the Clinical Effectiveness Program at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Prior to the Fellowship, Ms. Botwinick served as Director of the Department of Board and Committee Activities at the Joint Commission. In this role, she managed activities of the 29-member Joint Commission Board and its twelve committees and the 17-member Board of JCR and its five committees. She also was charged with building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholder groups including Joint Commission Corporate Members (American College of Physicians, American College of Surgeons, American Dental Association, American Hospital Association, and American Medical Association); Professional and Technical Advisory Committees and Liaison Network (includes approximately 250 health care professional organizations); Public Advisory Group on Health Care Quality; and the Nursing Advisory Council.

Ms. Botwinick received a Bachelor of Arts degree from
Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts and a Master of Science degree from DePaul University, Management of Public Services, in Chicago, Illinois
